Wisconsin truly has
all four seasons

And our seasons are obvious.
Winter resembles the north pole,
summer is like a tropical forest,
fall is so rich in color,

and the spring eruption of green makes your soul sing

Milwaukee County Museum - Old Wisconsin Street and plenty more to see.
Milwaukee County Zoo - Largest zoo in Wisconsin featuring animals in natural habitats.
House on the Rock - Very interesting large museum created by a private citizen.  Somewhat pricey, but you can spend an entire day looking at the varied displays.  Well worth the price.
Al Capone's Hideaway - Up north, long drive, with no other nearby attractions. Log home where the famous gangster spent his free time. My kids liked this place!
Aviation Museum in Oshgosh.
Wisconsin Dells - A tourist trap, but lots of fun and lots to do. Kids love it. Has a wax museum, lots of rides, interesting food, and the famous duck rides. Think everyone in Wisconsin has spent a day or two here.
State Street, downtown Madison - Street vendors in the summer, entertainers in nearby rest areas. Near museums, unique book stores. This place reminds me of the 1960's culture. Note that some of the citizens can be quite rude and opinionated.

Interesting Places to Drive Through

Mineral Point - Historic Wisconsin city.
Neillsville - Grand Avenue. Large turn of the century homes that are more like mansions.
Marshfield - Near highway 13 surrounding the Fleet Farm area (on the way to Spencer) are many newer and unique homes. Marshfield's major employer is the Medical Center and Hospital, so you know where your health care dollars went.

Places I find hard to handle.
Wausau - Too many one-way streets.
Stevens Point - One-way streets.
Milwaukee - Okay if you stay off the freeways. For a large city, there really isn't enough to do or see to keep me coming back for more (and I grew up there).
Madison - State street and the Capitol area are congested, some one-way streets. Need to park and end up doing a lot of walking.  This is a university town, and it has a 1960's attitude. Once we attended a concert, and were pushed off the sidewalk by the crowd into the bicycle path, and were verbally attacked by bicycle riders. Have experienced similar rudeness almost every time visiting the downtown area of Madison.

Clark County, Wisconsin  wpe50.jpg (18298 bytes)
Rock Dam
- Lake, campgrounds, sand beach. Very hectic, busy place in the summer.
Mead Lake - Campgrounds, fishing. Small lake.
Clark County Jail, Neillsville - Next to the courthouse.   Interesting architecture.
Clark County Park - North of Greenwood on Highway 73 on the Black River.   Beautiful small shady park. Limited number of campsites.  Has three shelters for events and a playground for the kids.
Schneider Park, Neillsville - Old, beautiful city park. No camping.  Has restrooms and shelters for picnics or parties. Near the golf course.
Central and northern Wisconsin are beautiful places to spend a vacation.  Of course, there isn't the traffic, noise, or pollution found in more populated areas.  You might need to become adjusted to the smell of fresh green growing things and the smell of water found in lakes. What you are smelling is nature and fresh air. Central and northern Wisconsin have many mature forests which provide built-in air-conditioning on hot summer days.

wpe52.jpg (17836 bytes)  There is more wildlife in central and northern Wisconsin than I have seen anywhere else.  Many birds spend their summers in Wisconsin raising their new families.  We do not have poisonous snakes.

My favorite places to stay:
AmeriInn - Wisconsin Rapids.  Nice furnishings, clean, great continental breakfast, nice lounge, lots of room extras (microwave, refrigerator, coffee pot, hair dryer), swimming pool.

Holiday Inn - Stevens Point.  Rooms surround pool with patio tables and chairs outside the first floor rooms, very outdoor tropical feel.  Has nighttime entertainment but sound does not travel to rooms.

Clark County Festivals and Fairs
Loyal Corn Fest - All the free sweet corn loaded with as much butter as you want.  Very small festival but well known.
Greenwood Dairy Days - Very small.  Concurrent craft shows and tours of Branstiter's museum.  Baseball tournaments, rides, games, food, beer tent.
Clark County Fair - See prize-winning vegetables, fruits, flowers.   Visit the livestock barns (exhibits change throughout the course of the fair).   Games, rides, food, entertainment.
The Community
Clark County economy is based on agriculture.  You will see lots of cows.  Main crops are corn, soybeans, and hay.  There is a heavy Amish and Mennonite population, so watch out for horses and buggies traveling the roads.
Best State Fair in the Midwest
Minnesota State Fair - Excellent entertainment, variety of food from many nations, spectacular craft exhibits, lots of rides, tons of places to buy almost anything, manufacturer's displays and product demonstrations.  Fantastic livestock barns, and don't miss the horticulture buildings.  It will take a minimum of two days to tour this fair.

The past few years, I have had an opportunity to accompany my husband in the semi-truck and have been able to visit quite a few states in the middle section of the US.  Wisconsin and even much of Minnesota are definitely more green than the other states during the warmer seasons.  There seems to be a wider variety of vegetation up here, and we seem to have a lot more flowering weeds, shrubs, etc., than other states.   It seems like homeowners here are more interested in landscaping their yards and there are an awful lot of flowers growing in people's yards, particularly in rural areas and smaller towns, in this state.  Maybe the abundance of landscaping is due to the fact that most homes up here have basements/cellars, which are not particularly attractive, and landscaping is a good way to cover that.
